Welcome to Kristine’s Blog, the Page Turner!

MAY hours:

Sunday, Monday and Tuesday: CLOSED

Wednesday through Saturday: OPEN 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

It’s hard to believe that I’m writing this with snow still on the ground (and lots of it)! Yes, we are hardy folks, and can face many hardships, but the weather really has got the best of us this time. What can we do except look to better days ahead? May flowers, sunshine, new buds, running water, warmer temperatures — is that too optimistic, Mother Nature?

Celebrations!! First, we have Mother’s Day, giving us another excuse to honour Mothers everywhere. Thanks to mine, Sandra Jones, for your never-ending generosity, love and support; for reading to me as a child and nurturing that which sustains me, and for the once-a-week phone calls to check in on me, no matter how old I get!

May 15th will mark the One-Year Anniversary of Lucky Stone Books. I’d like to thank all of my customers, for their patronage and mostly for our book chats. How wonderful it is to have a place for the community to feed their love of reading at reasonable prices. I hope to see my cottagers back soon, along with Gimli’s tourists; they are an integral part of the Interlake and I’m grateful. Thank you to some of my trusted partners who provide quality Manitoba-Made goods: Hartmont Candle Company, Mordens’ Chocolates, SwaiDesigns fused glass birds, Hotcups Tea, and my greeting card ladies Audrey Roberts and Darlene Jonasson. Look for new pop-up items like mullah bracelets by Carley Matkowski, imported tapestries from Far Out Imports and earrings by Palliser Avenue. We always have a good selection of puzzles and paint-by-number, as well as some new Creative Starter kits for time at the cabin.

I promote reading every day, and I have to say, my obsession continues to grow, not diminish. The more authors I discover, the more I want to know. I’ve already talked about my Agatha Christie reading project, which is going strong — what a trailblazer she was, so clever!! I’ll also mention the IWRC Space of our Own Book Club selection for May: The Bees by Laline Paull — beautiful book!

Please note that we are not buying or trading ANY books right now; I will post the names of authors or specific titles I’m interested in purchasing in July and August ONLY. It is my goal to carefully curate the titles and other items for sale at Lucky Stone Books and that works best if I am the one making those decisions, not based on what people are tired of having on their bookshelves. I encourage folks to donate their books to charity to be recycled!

Here’s to hoping Lake Winnipeg is flowing by the May Long Weekend. See you soon at Lucky Stone Books. I look forward to building an active reading community; keep in touch through my Instagram, Facebook group Lucky Stone Books, Email or message through the website. I’m always looking for recommendations or author suggestions and I definitely stock the store based on requests.

Always Reading, Kristine

  1. Wonderful Kristine! We will be signing up for the GoodReads app and look forward to the days when we can gather for your book club and events. Thank you.

  2. My daughter and I usually try to make a trip to Gimli every Spring Break and though the weather wasn’t fantastic, we did make it this last Friday. It was so great to see that there is still a book store up and running and I have to say its looking great. It’s open and uncluttered and welcoming. There were plenty of great books to look through and we were even kind of enough to receive a lovely bookmark 🙂 Thank you for providing such a great shop to be the highlight of our trip to Gimli
